Vardenafil is a prescription medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors and works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, which helps achieve and maintain an erection.
Key Information
Uses: Vardenafil is approved for treating erectile dysfunction. It does not increase sexual desire or protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
Dosage: The typical starting dose is 10 mg, taken orally, as needed, approximately 60 minutes before sexual activity. The dose may be adjusted (to 5 mg or 20 mg maximum) based on efficacy and tolerability, but should not be taken more than once every 24 hours.
Administration: Vardenafil can be taken with or without food, though high-fat meals may delay its absorption. An orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) form also exists, which should be placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve without water.
Mechanism: Vardenafil works by blocking the PDE5 enzyme, which allows the blood vessels in the penis to relax and fill with blood when a man is sexually aroused. Sexual stimulation is necessary for the medication to be effective.
