Emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is a combination antiretroviral medication used to treat HIV-1 infection (in combination with other drugs) and for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection in high-risk individuals. It is widely known by its brand name, Truvada, and is available as a generic.
Key Information
Active Ingredients & Drug Class: The tablets contain emtricitabine (a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor). These work by blocking an enzyme essential for HIV multiplication.
Uses:
Treatment of HIV-1: Used with other anti-HIV drugs to reduce viral load and improve immune function.
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP): Reduces the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1 in high-risk individuals when used with safer sex practices. It does not prevent other STIs.
Hepatitis B (HBV): Can be part of treatment for those co-infected with HIV and HBV, as both components are active against HBV.
