Tenofovir, Emtricitabine & Efavirenz tablets (often combined as a single pill, like Atripla) are a fixed-dose antiretroviral (ARV) medication used to treat HIV-1 infection by stopping the virus from multiplying, boosting the immune system (CD4 cells), and reducing the risk of AIDS, but not curing HIV or preventing transmission. This combination therapy, containing an NNRTI (Efavirenz) and two NRTIs (Emtricitabine & Tenofovir), is taken once daily, usually at bedtime on an empty stomach, to manage side effects like dizziness and insomnia, requiring strict adherence for effectiveness.

How it Works

  • Efavirenz: A non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that blocks HIV replication.

  • Emtricitabine & Tenofovir: Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that also stop the virus from making copies of itself.

  • Together, they reduce the viral load (amount of HIV in the body) and increase CD4 cells, strengthening the immune system.

Usage & Administration

  • Dosage: One tablet once daily, usually taken at bedtime.

  • With Food: Take on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal) to lessen drowsiness/dizziness.

  • Consistency: Take it at the same time daily; strict adherence is crucial.

  • Missed Dose: If missed by less than 12 hours, take it; if more than 12 hours, skip and continue your schedule.

  • Vomiting: If you vomit within 1 hour of taking it, take another tablet.
