Pomalidomide is an anti-cancer prescription medication used primarily to treat multiple myeloma and Kaposi sarcoma. It is an immunomodulatory agent and is only available in capsule form through a restricted distribution program due to a high risk of severe birth defects.
Key Information
Uses: Pomalidomide is used to treat adults with multiple myeloma, typically after at least two prior therapies have been tried (including lenalidomide and a proteasome inhibitor). It is also used for AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma and HIV-negative Kaposi sarcoma.
Mechanism: It works by stimulating the immune system to attack cancer cells, stopping new blood vessel growth that feeds tumors (angiogenesis inhibitor), and killing or stopping cancer cell growth.
Dosage and Administration: Pomalidomide is taken orally as a capsule once daily, usually on days 1 to 21 of a 28-day cycle, in combination with other medications like dexamethasone.
