This belongs to a group of medicines called cytotoxics (also called chemotherapy). Melphalan is used to treat cancer. It works by reducing the number of abnormal cells your body makes. Melphalan is FDA-approved and widely used for: 

• Multiple myeloma: A cancer of the plasma cells found in the bone marrow. It is often used as a high-dose conditioning treatment before a stem cell transplant.

• Ovarian cancer: Used to manage advanced epithelial ovarian cancer by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.
