Leuprolide acetate injection is a synthetic hormone (GnRH agonist) used to treat hormone-sensitive conditions like advanced prostate cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and central precocious puberty by reducing sex hormones (estrogen/testosterone) in the body, leading to temporary chemical menopause or castration. Administered via subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, it works by suppressing the pituitary's release of hormones that stimulate ovaries or testes, and is given regularly (monthly, quarterly, or every 4-6 months depending on formulation). Common side effects include hot flashes, decreased libido, fatigue, and injection site reactions, while long-term use can cause bone loss.
How it Works
Initially increases, then continuously suppresses Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH).
Results in castrate levels of testosterone in men and post-menopausal levels of estrogen in women.
Uses
Prostate Cancer: Palliative treatment for advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.
Endometriosis & Uterine Fibroids: Reduces pain and growth of lesions/fibroids.
