Abiraterone acetate tablets are used to treat advanced prostate cancer, including metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and high-risk metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC), by blocking the body's production of male hormones (androgens) that fuel cancer growth. It's taken with prednisone or methylprednisolone and works best on an empty stomach, slowing cancer spread and improving outcomes for patients.

Key Uses

  • Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer (CRPC): For cancer that doesn't respond to traditional hormone therapies.

  • High-Risk Metastatic Castration-Sensitive Prostate Cancer (CSPC): When cancer has spread but still responds to hormone-lowering treatments, often combined with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT).

How It Works (Mechanism)

  • It's an androgen biosynthesis inhibitor, blocking the CYP17 enzyme that produces testosterone in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostate tumor tissues.

  • By reducing testosterone, it stops cancer cells from getting the hormones they need to grow and spread.

How to Take It

  • Take by mouth, usually once daily, exactly as prescribed.

  • Take on an empty stomach: at least 2 hours before or 1 hour after a meal.

  • Swallow tablets whole with water; do not break, crush, or chew.

  • Always take with a corticosteroid (prednisone or methylprednisolone) as directed.
